"Webb's Line" operated the paddle steamers Nevada and Nebraska on the
Sydney-Honolulu-San Francisco service in 1871-73, and they also called
at Auckland & Wellington. There were mail subsidies from the New Zealand,
New South Wales and American governments, and with the opening of the
US transcontinental railroad ‎(1869)‎ it was a new route to Europe.
